iPhone 4

Apple’s latest is always the greatest – you have to give them that. Sometimes it seems they put less effort into making it than in letting people know they did. But with the Apple iPhone 4, they were obviously hard at work. The 4th generation iPhone has an all new look, new feel and plenty of new skill. We already caught a glimpse of the iOS4. But there’s much more: a 1GHz chip, two cameras, HD video and of course the Retina display – the highest-res screen we’ve seen so far on a GSM phone.

Surely there are still enough blank spots on the feature list but that’s Apple and its iPhone. Compromises are being made in every phone out there anyway. But the simple fact is Number 4 is the best iPhone to-date. Let’s see how good that is.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM and quad-band 3G support with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 3.5" 16M-color LED-backlit TFT capacitive touchscreen of 640 x 960 px resolution
  • Scratch-resistant glass front and rear, with fingerprint-resistant coating
  • 1GHz Apple A4 SoC; 512MB of RAM
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and touch focus
  • 720p video recording at 30fps
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n
  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity; digital compass
  • 16/32GB storage options
  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor and three-axis gyro sensor
  • Active noise cancellation with a dedicated secondary microphone
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack, stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Excellent audio output quality
  • Slim waistline at only 9.3mm
  • Secondary front-facing camera
  • Some degree of multitasking
  • Rich AppStore

Main disadvantages

  • Hardware design is prone to reception issues
  • MicroSIM card support only
  • No Flash support in the web browser
  • No true multitasking for all applications
  • FaceTime video calls work only over Wi-Fi
  • No file transfer over Bluetooth or USB Mass Storage mode
  • No hardware shutter key for the camera
  • No FM radio
  • No stereo speakers
  • No microSD card slot
  • No smart dialing
  • Too dependent on iTunes for loading multimedia content
  • Poor loudspeaker performance

As you can see, most of the main disadvantages are simply passed from one generation to the next but - whatever iPhone you’re coming from - the Number 4 will tick most of your boxes. Upgraders will be used to the shortcomings, and unbiased observers will have less points to complain against.

It just seems some features will be forever missing. The iPhone’s memory isn’t expandable and you can’t use the thing as an external drive (this also means that files are only transferred via iTunes, again). Bluetooth has been upgraded to cover not only for music and calls but a compatible wireless keyboard too. File transfers however are a no-go.

The lack of Flash support in the Safari browser is no surprise given the Apple-Adobe feud. Luckily there’s the good old YouTube app to partly make up for that but Flash games are still out of the question.

There is now a secondary video-call cam but the “reinvented” FaceTime video calls feature only works over Wi-Fi (for now) and between two iPhone 4’s.

As for the multitasking, this is the closest the iPhone has ever gotten but there is no true multitasking, and certainly not for all apps.

All that (and a bit more) aside, the new goodies seem to merit at least some of the iPhone 4 hype. The Retina display is gorgeous. The 3.5” capacitive TFT touchscreen has four times the resolution of the older iPhones. At 640 x 960 pixels, it’s the best we’ve seen – statistically. But perhaps the most impressive too, for its actual performance.

There’s a generational leap in imaging too. The first two iPhones had a single 2MP fixed focus camera on board. Last year’s 3GS tried to make some sense with a 3-megapixel autofocus snapper. With the iPhone 4, Apple are finally beginning to look good. The primary 5-megapixel autofocus camera not only takes impressive images but shoots 720p videos too. Oh, and it has a LED flash.

iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS is the new improved version of the phone from Apple. The company has tried to solidify its leadership in the Smartphone market with the release of this new upgrade. The phone sports no new external design changes but the internal core components have been totally redesigned.

Design and Looks
The iPhone 3GS is externally similar to the orginal iPhone . The phone comes with the beautiful high-resolution 3.5inch diagonal touch screen , offering a resolution of 480x320 pixels. It features the same 4 physical buttons ,starting with the Home button just below the touchscreen , sleep/wake at the top , a volume up/down rocker on the left side and a ringer toggle just above the volume controls.

On the rear the phone comes along with the same white black plastic as with the iPhone 3G.
The only change to the phone physically has been the oleophobic coating to the device’s touch screen. The screen’s coating is intended to keep fingerprints to a minimum. The screen does not eliminate the fingerprints but provides a repellant surface that’s easily wiped clean.

Under the hood , the iPhone now runs at 600 MHZ compared to previous models with 412MHZ. Its also got 256MB of RAM , compared to 128MB in previous models. The result is remarkable and which can be seen as the device boots up. The changes seen in the app load time are also remarkable.

Previously the phone sported the 2 megapixel camera , this time around the phone comes along with a 3 mega pixel camera and ends up producing brighter colors and sharper images. The camera also comes along with a auto focus and a single tap on the touch screen can focus the object in the image. The other big thing about this phone from its older generations is that it can shoot video too. The same camera application can be use to go into the video mode.

iPhone 3GS also initiates voice support this time which is also seen in their new ipod touch and ipod nano lineups. Phone dialing and even apps launch along with ipod control are supported by the voice support. The accuracy is decent and works out pretty well .

The phone’s most featured application has been the compass. The iPhone 3GS is able to tell the difference between magnetic north and true north. The compass is accurate and one tap on the cross hair would locate our position on the map.

With regards to the software on the iPhone 3GS the phone offers new features with its iPhone OS 3.0 Software update. Some of them include the copy-past feature, support for landscape keyboard mode, spotlight search and Bluetooth A2DP support for stereo headphones.
The battery on the phone seems to have improve but the manufacturers say that the iPhone 3GS is able to use its internal hardware in more efficient manner without burning out its battery life.

Overall the iPhone 3GS is no doubt the best Apple phone the Cupertino based group have ever made. The company has eliminated fundamental flaws previously encountered on the phone. This is one phone for the consumer who has never purchased an iPhone, by far the best Smartphone on the planet.

The good: The iPhone 3GS finally adds common cell phone features like multimedia messaging, video recording, and voice dialing. It runs faster; its promised battery life is longer; and the multimedia quality continues to shine.

The bad: The iPhone 3GS' call quality shows no improvements and the 3G signal reception remains uneven. We still don't get Flash Lite, USB transfer and storage, or multitasking.

The bottom line: The iPhone 3GS doesn't make the same grand leap that the iPhone 3G made from the first-generation model, but the latest Apple handset is still a compelling upgrade for some users. The iPhone 3GS is faster and we appreciate the new features and extended battery life, but call quality and 3G reception still need improvement.

iPhone 3G

The first generation Apple iPhone just got an update. And as the name suggests it’s the new inclusion of 3G connectivity. This legendary trendsetter also features many other improved features but that’s nothing legendary. Read on to see what we are talking about.

Design and Looks
When most people think of touchscreens, the first phone that pops in their mind is the iPhone- and for good reason. The iPhone 3G has an inimitable yet quintessentially touchscreen design. It packs in a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that takes up the entire front fascia of the phone save for portions at the top and bottom of the form factor. And below the screen is the single hardware key- the home key. While most users say that Apple has oversimplified the design, many more prefer the single key layout to the three to five keys that are found on the touchscreen phones of other competitors. Apart from this there isn’t much on the exteriors except for a silver-rim that frames the front of the touchscreen.

The back of the phone is as plain as the front and is curved instead of the flat design incorporated on the earlier iPhone. The plastic at the back is a finger print magnet but looks good nonetheless. At the top corner is the camera and the top centre houses a big Apple logo. The bottom has some inscription but that’s about it. In a nutshell, the phone has classic conservative styling that exudes an understated charm that is common to all Apple products.

An integral part of any touchscreen phone is the touchscreen itself. Its performance has a make or break implication on the phone’s popularity. In the case of the iPhone 3G, it is great. In fact, no other handset in the market today, regardless of being touch or not, has a screen that’s as good as the one on the iPhone 3G. The colours it produces are vivid and the contrast level the screen is capable of is simply out of this world. Even the phone’s legibility under direct sunlight is so good that it puts Nokia phones to shame; who are notorious for their excellent displays with above average sunlight legibility.

Now, a touchscreen’s display is only half the story, the software too counts big-time. In the case of the Mac based iPhone OS, it trounces all other mobile operating systems. In fact, most touchscreen user interfaces are loosely based on the iPhone OS and since iPhone is leading the pack, its OS is unmatched in almost every aspect. It is both responsive and boasts of great menu logic- All important applications and functions are available right there on the homescreen; something you’d have to dig under several menus to get to in most other touch handsets.

There is however one glaring flaw with the OS and that is the lack of multi-tasking support. This is unheard of in any other smart phone and yet it is a distinct shortcoming that is still not rectified in this incarnation of the iPhone.

The phone’s telephony is good; it offers superb reception and in-call voice clarity. But on the flip-side the phone’s loudspeaker performance is quite dismal. And we do mean ‘quiet’- given its performance; we doubt most users will be able to hear it in noisy environments. Another feature that still lacks in this phone is smart dialing.

The phone’s audio quality is phenomenal and stays true to the iPod pedigree. The camera is poor as always and its performance not surprising given that it has the same specs as the camera on the old iPhone. We believe this could be attributable to the poor optics of the camera. Another disturbing anomaly in the camera performance is the reports from some users who say that each iPhone unit has a different camera performance than any other unit. This may be true but in any case, the camera is always bad.

A good thing about the iPhone is that it incorporates Apple’s proprietary Safari browser which has proved its worth innumerable times on the PC. Its performance on the iPhone is no less by any measure except for the limiting size of the screen. But as far as mobilephones go the browser is one of the quickest and hence one of the best. The page-rendering is excellent, it has a dedicated .com button for the address bar, it offers multi-touch support and finally it has a new image download feature.

As the name suggests, the iPhone 3G now features 3G connectivity. But that’s not all- the phone also packs in a GPS receiver but unfortunately no navigation software. People can still use a third party app or Google Maps but there’s also no turn-by-turn voice guidance. Finally, the one application that makes the iPhone 3G what it is is the AppStore. The AppStore is the reason why the iTouch and the older iPhone were so successful in the first place. It allows people to download third party applications for use on the phone from it. While a few apps are available for free there is a small fee to be paid for some others. Apps and music can also be purchased over iTunes but the AppStore probably features a wider selection of applications.

To sum up, the iPhone 3G is a niche touchscreen phone, but at the price it’s selling at you could get a much cheaper alternative with the same specs. However the unique Apple branding and the availability of the popular AppStore will burn a hole in your pocket that you can’t really complain about.

Key features:

  • 3.5" 16M-color TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels
  • Quad-band GSM support
  • Tri-band UMTS support with HSDPA
  • Built-in GPS receiver
  • Wi-Fi
  • 8 to 16GB of onboard storage
  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Silky smooth user interface with multi-touch user support
  • Unsurpassed web surfing experience
  • Push email with MS Exchange support
  • AppStore access for direct application download and installation
  • Redone rear
  • TV-out port

Main disadvantages:

  • No video calls over the 3G network
  • The handset wobbles on hard even surfaces
  • There are a number of messaging downers
  • Camera has no auto focus, nor video recording… nor any settings at all
  • Safari browser doesn't support Flash and Java, doesn't have a download manager
  • Bluetooth support limited to headset use only (no A2DP or file transfers)
  • No office document editor
  • No copy/paste functionality
  • You cannot sync Notes and TO-DOs
  • No memory card slot (but knowing Apple there will never be one)
Now, since we'll be heavily comparing the old and new iPhone, how about the following arrangement - the first one we'll call Number One and the newbie will be Number Two. Sorted. Wait a minute, no good? Crap, we knew it. OK then, the first one will be the iPhone 1G (as in "generation" of the device), while the new one will still be iPhone 3G (as in "generation" of the wireless network). That might sound inconsistent, but it's short and we like it this way, so before you go ballistic in the comments section, remember Number One and Number Two.

So, back to the drill - the 3G-enabled iPhone was rumored ever since the iPhone 1G surfaced last year. Now that we have the real thing in our hands, it doesn't seem that groundbreaking anymore. Nevertheless, there are quite a few things to cover so we think reviewing it in detail is worth it. There's the updated design, the new white color (which we happen to have), the new iPhone 2.0 firmware/software/OS (call it what you will) with AppStore on board, the push email functionality and, finally, the GPS and HSDPA topping.

BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300

Research In Motion (RIM) memperkenalkan anggota baru keluarga BlackBerry Curve di
Indonesia.

BlackBerry Curve 3G Specification:

  • 320x240 pixel color display
  • Transmissive TFT LCD
  • Font size (user selectable)
  • Displays over 65,000 colors
  • 3G network support
  • Optical trackpad
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Simultaneous voice and data
  • Email and text messaging
  • BlackBerry® Messenger
  • Instant Messaging
  • Phone
  • Browser
  • Camera and video recording
  • Wi-Fi®
  • GPS
  • Media player
  • Organizer
  • Bluetooth®
  • Tethered modem
  • 2.0 MP camera
  • Fixed focus
  • Video recording
General:

On the left side of the 9300 is the 3.5mm headset jack, the MicroUSB slot and the left convenience key.On the right the up/down volume controls and the right convenience key can be found. On the top in typical Curve fashion we get media controls. On the bottom all we see is the microphone. Apart from that it is nice and smooth.Over on the back all we get is the camera lens and a nice BlackBerry logo. And of course the front looks like a BlackBerry should look.

Highlights:

  • 3G/WiFi
  • Great Keyboard
  • Push email
  • Facebook app
  • BlackBerry Messenger

Lowlights:

  • Slow web browser
  • Rubbish games
  • Poor camera

Review:

Physically the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is only slightly different from the 8520. Quite noticeably it has a silver bezel around it much like on the BlackBerry Bold 9700. This makes the phone look much better in my opinion. We also have a change on the back of the device. On the 8520 the battery cover was plain shiny plastic. Now on the 9300 it has been given a nice mottled effect. Again this ads to the appearance of the phone but the downside is that the mottled effect makes the BlackBerry a little more slippery. Hold on tight!

With its nice rounded edges the 9300 feels great in the hand. It is a reasonably large phone but it needs to be to compensate for the full QWERTY keyboard. The beauty of it is that it can be used both one and two handed, whichever you are happier with. Although if you are a new BlackBerry user I can guarantee it wont take long until you are typing away with both thumbs at a great rate of knots.

In terms of build quality the back of the device does feel a little cheap and flimsy (I'm sure it is not though). The front however feels rock solid. It needs to be to cope with the thousands of emails and BBM's it has to handle.

As I mentioned above the keyboard is really the main feature on the BlackBerry. The keyboard on the 9300 is identical to that on the 8520. The keys are nicely spaced apart and just the right size. They would be. RIM have been making BlackBerry devices for a long time and with the market share in smart phones of course they have got it right. The keyboard is slightly different to that on the Bold 9700 and the forthcoming Torch 9800. These two devices have a slightly different design with not as much space between the keys and each key is a wee bit softer. Anyway, they are all great if you ask me.

Like all the BlackBerry smartphones the 9300 does not have a load of on board memory built in but it can support MicroSD cards. Not sure what size will be supplied by the networks yet though.

Taking a quick look at the home screen you will see that at the top, like on most phones, you are shown the battery quantity, carrier details, the time, signal strength, and a Wi-Fi signal. Towards the left hand side you will also see any notifications you may have such as emails and Facebook notifications. At the bottom of the screen you are presented with six icons. Don't worry if these are not the ones you want on the home screen. They can be moved and you can choose whichever ones you want.

Under the screen you will find the call send/end keys as well as the BlackBerry menu button and a back button. These all are proper buttons, although are covered in a single piece of plastic and they give a proper click. Centered in the middle of them is the optical trackpad. Gone are the days when a BlackBerry had a roller ball. The track pad has replaced the balls and from expectance I can say it is so much better. The speed in which the track pad operates the on screen icons can be altered. Its speed can be varied from 0-100% within the options section of the device.

As with all BlackBerry smart phones you get convenience keys and the Curve 3G 9300 has one on either side. As standard they will come preset to activate voice dialing on the left and the camera on the right. These can be changed though to allow for any shortcut you like. Bonus.

The main menu on the 9300 is simple and this allows for quick access to any application.

So, onto the main applications on the device.

Messaging has to come top of the list on a BlackBerry. Lets start with email. On any BlackBerry you can have up to ten email accounts. All email will be pushed to the device, which will help conserve battery, instead of it syncing with the server every 10-15 minutes. The email interface is extremely easy to use and what I love about BlackBerry is that everything is quick. You can create an email in seconds. Or open your inbox and delete 20 emails in seconds. You just cant beat it in my opinion.

SMS is straight forward and can be integrated with email messages too. Let me explain. You have two options when it comes to viewing messages. Option one is to use different folders (icons) for each messaging client. For example if I had two email accounts set up I would need three folders on my home screen. Two for the separate email accounts and one for SMS.

The alternative is what I use and this is an integrated messages folder. Here all your email and SMS and even BBM's if you want can come into the same folder. If you also use some other instant messaging clients those messages will also show up. This frees up space on your home screen for your other most popular applications. I find it a cleaner way of doing things but like most things in life this comes down to personal preference.

The emails you receive will still appear on your computer as well as on the BlackBerry but when it comes to deleting on the BB you do have the option to delete just from the handheld or from the server too which is handy.

On too BlackBerry Messenger aka BBM.

If you are not aware of what BBM is I will summarise. BlackBerry Messenger is an instant messaging client that is exclusive to BlackBerry smart phones. BBM will allow you to instantly communicate with your friends who also own a BlackBerry. You are not just restricted to text. You can also send pictures and voice notes and the best bit is it doesn't cost anything. The costs are included in your monthly payment for BlackBerry Services so you can send as many BBM's as you wish. Once you use the app you will become addicted, I can guarantee. That is unless you have no friends!

As you will see above you have your details at the very top of the screen. Jumping into your own profile will allow you to set a status message and this will be seen by your BBM contacts.

On the screen shot you will see that there is a red icon next to the recent Updates section. This will either be a status update notification of it will be letting you know you have a new contact.

BlackBerry messenger is the one application that I really would not want to live without.

Like on all BlackBerry devices (apart from the Torch) the web browser is not great. It works but it is slow and definitely not one of its strongest features.

As you can see, initially when launching a web page it looks just like it would do on a computer but you will need to zoom in to read the text. This is done one of two ways. You can either use the onscreen icon which will have a plus sign on it, like in the above pictures or you can use the menu where zoom in and out options will be.

Accessing and saving bookmarks is simple like most things on the BlackBerry. It is just a case of pressing the menu key and you are given an array of options.

Social networking is rather popular these days, so I hear, and the BlackBerry is great at integrating with the applications. Facebook is probably the most common one these days and the BlackBerry Facebook app is awesome.

The home page will show you your friends updates and here you also get a status update box so you can update your own status in seconds. At the top of the app are various tabs for viewing other features such as notifications and friends. Uploading photos to Facebook from the BlackBerry is a great feature and really quite painless.

The best thing about the app is its integration with BlackBerry. If you get a Facebook message etc the BlackBerry will tell you. This is much better than on some platforms where you get an email to tell you you have a Facebook notification. The BlackBerry eliminates this and will guide you straight into the app. Cool.

Twitter is another popular application. RIM have their own Twitter app called Twitter for BlackBerry but it is not the best. At present I feel that UberTwitter is the number one BlackBerry Twitter client and it is free! It can be found in app world.

The three tabs at the top are your timeline, mentions and direct messages so getting to each section is a breeze. You can integrate them all into your timeline and in addition, within the settings there are a loads of tweaks and options you can choose. A great app for keeping up to date with your Twitter buddies.

The calendar feature on the 9300 is excellent. It is the same as on all the other BlackBerry devices and I use this daily to keep track of my meetings and reminders.

Creating a calendar entry is simple pimple. Just click on the time you want it and type the subject. You can then tweak the time and location if you need to. The entry can also be shared with another BlackBerry friend so the event will be sent to their BlackBerry too! Is that cool or what?

As well as the day view you can also choose week, month and agenda view. Whichever suits you best. And with the option to sync the calendar with Outlook or iCalendar (if using a Mac) you are given piece of mind that you can work on either the phone or PC and the two will integrate beautifully.

I mentioned app world a little earlier in the review. If you have not used a BlackBerry before then this is where you can download applications from. App World is installed onto the BlackBerry and so you have access to downloads wherever you go.

The amount of applications here is a long way off from being on par with the Apple App Store or the Android Market but you will find loads of useful stuff here. There are both free and paid applications and the top 25 of each are shown with a tab at the bottom of the screen for quick access.

With GPS built in you can use maps to assist you if you are unfortunate to get lost. BlackBerry Maps will be on the device as well as Google Maps (carrier determined). BlackBerry maps is much the same as Google Maps but I much prefer the latter. The BlackBerry version just looks a bit rubbish.

Like on a all other platforms you have the choice of viewing a normal map or satellite one. A press of the '0' key will pin point your location and you can use the 1 and 3 keys to zoom in and out. Moving around the map is done using the track pad.

The media features on the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 are ok but not the best.

I have no issues with the music player at all. The music quality is great and without headphones the speaker is excellent on the 9300. The user interface is simple and attractive and with the bonus of media controls on the top of the phone you can switch tracks without taking the device out of a pocket or holster.

Viewing pictures is quite nice although the BlackBerry does not have the biggest screen. Images are shown initially in a gallery and then you just click on the one you wish to view. From here you can scroll back and fourth through the images full screen. The best bit here is that it is dead easy to select an image and then send it to a friend, using email, BBM, MMS etc. It can be done in just a couple of seconds.

Watching video is not the best. The screen size does not help and you more than likely would not want to watch a whole movie on it but you could if you wanted. I did once! If importing a movie to the 9300 the video quality will be ok but if viewing YouTube online the quality is pretty poor I am afraid to say.

You get some useful options with the clock on the BlackBerry. Not a feature I normally mention in a review but on the BlackBerry I think it is quite impressive. As well as being able to change the style of clock you also get a timer, stopwatch and alarm. You also have the option to select bedtime mode. This means that when you plug the charger into the device the clock will automatically show full screen and it will be dimmed so you don't get woken up by the bright light. Once in bedtime mode your BlackBerry LED indicator will not flash at you, again so it does not wake you up. How thoughtful you are RIM.

Getting things set up on the device such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and email is far from complicated. You have a setup folder in the main menu and here you will be guided through each process.

The camera on the 9300 is far from excellent. With no flash it performs really poor in low light conditions as you can see below.

In bright conditions it is ok but not much better than you would expect from a 2mp camera. The 9300 will not be a replacement for a digital camera that's for sure.

If you want a phone for playing games then a BlackBerry is not for you. Although there are five pre loaded on the 9300 they are not very good. You can download more from App World but you will not get anywhere near the same experience as on the iPhone or Android devices. The BlackBerry is just not built for the same gaming experience.

Conclusion:

The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is a great device. If you are deciding whether to get a BlackBerry then I think the choice needs to be made depending on your needs.

If the most important thing for you is communication then get a BlackBerry. It handles email, instant messaging (BBM) and the social networking apps perfectly and in my opinion no other platform does it so well, partly due to having the wonderful hardware keyboard.

If you are into watching a lot of media, web browsing and playing games then you will be happier with another platform. Or get a BlackBerry and an iPod Touch!

The 9300 sits in the middle of the BlackBerry range. At the top we have the Bold 9700 and the forthcoming Torch 9800. At the bottom we have the Curve 8520 and sat in the middle we have the 9300 and the Pearl 3G 9105.

Overall the 9300 has some nice improvements over the 8520. Not massive ones but still better. Now we just need to see how much it will be sold for by the networks. I don't think we will see this at the same £150 price we currently get the 8520 for on PAYG. In fact I know we wont.

BlackBerry Storm2 9520 Review

BlackBerry Storm2 9520 is the second generation BlackBerry with a touch-sensitive screen, successor of the highly-anticipated Storm. The keys on the front are now touch-sensitive as well, and the screen no longer uses the SurePress technology, which made the display of the first Storm uncomfortable to use. The Storm2 also adds Wi-Fi, but the other features are similar and include a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS and a full HTML browser.

The Storm2 fits in the high end segment of the market, there are some phones with better specifications, like the Motorola Droid, and there are other -still high end- devices below the Storm2 like the Nokia 5800 Navigation Ed or the myTouch3G. So why is that the Storm2, being a high end and interesting device, has not received much attention? The Blackberry Storm2 wasn’t hyped like the Moto Droid, for example, because Verizon and RIM wanted to replace the original Storm without making too much noise. Instead of captivating a whole new market for it, they aimed at frustrated owners from the previous model. So now that we see that RIM and Verizon were just launching a replacement for the Storm that fixed issues with the original model, we can see why the Storm2 wasn’t hyped as much as the original Storm.
Design:

The Blackberry Storm2 is a beautiful phone. I can say that RIM really knows how to make their phones sturdy, solid and well built. I have tried many other devices, like the Nokia N97, a premium high-end phone, and compared to the Storm2, it just feels like a plastic toy. The HTC Touch Pro2 also feels cheap. Other devices like the Nokia 5800, HTC Hero, Samsung Omnia, MyTouch3G and G1 just can’t stand next to a Storm2 in terms built quality. Perhaps the only phone that is comparable to the Blackberry Storm2, is the Nokia E72.

However, the Storm2 is not perfect. The only serious problem that I find on the design of the Storm is the camera cover. After just two weeks with the device, the Flash was covered with dust! The interesting part is that the camera remained intact. Other than that, the battery cover of the Storm2 might be a little bit uncomfortable to open. This proves to be irrelevant because no one removes the battery cover from the device every day, and the battery cover stays firm when holding the device.

The Storm2 doesn’t have major problems with its design, every part is made out of excellent quality materials; the Blackberry Storm2 feels great in hand: thin, sexy, well built and excellently designed.

Software:

The software running in the original Storm was to blame for the failure of the device: it crashed, was unstable and everything but reliable. Fortunately, RIM fixed the problems that the OS from the original Storm had in the Storm2. The Storm2 runs a brand new version of BB OS. This new version running on the Storm2 is the major improvement over the Blackberry Storm. It is fast, stable and reliable. It is not perfect as most Operative Systems but does a great job. I had to do a couple of battery pull outs in the two months I have used the device. It often happened after installing new applications, the device went crazy and became unresponsive; removing the battery solved the problem and I was able to keep using the Storm2 normally. The new OS running on the Storm2 is a mature version of touch BB OS: it is intuitive, fast and responsive.

The most useful feature I find on the BB OS is how everything is connected and the apps work together with the phone as a whole. For example, the PayPal app works together with the Contacts app to send money, the Facebook client works together with the Calendar app and Contacts app, the Maps app also works with the calendar: everything is connected. For example, when you have new replies on Twitter, an icon appears on the homescreen, same with Facebook updates and other apps. This is very valuable because you are informed immediately of important events. On other OS you have to check the app to check if anything important happened.

The Storm2 has other cool features. The kinetic scrolling (means that scrolling continues when you lift your finger) is fast and cool to use. The ability to select multiple elements by using two fingers is also very convenient, for example, deleting multiple emails is as easy as selecting at the same time the first and last email you want to select. And, the multitouch technology on the web browser to: select, copy and paste text is really useful.

The Storm2 also offers the AppWorld where a significant amount of paid and free apps are available for download. I find the AppWorld very useful, I have downloaded a lot of fun games and useful applications without using a computer, very cool and convenient.

Connectivity:

The Blackberry Storm is a device that has an amazing capability to maintain the user constantly connected to the internet, together with plenty of social networks, email, SMS and calls of course. The Storm2 also exceeds in another factor of connectivity that is sometimes forgotten: battery life. Afterall, what is a phone useful for without battery ? The Storm2 can survive a full day of heavy duty, about 2 days of regular use and +3 days if the use is minimal. The battery really impressed me since it has the same capacity than the battery of the original Storm, but it lasts much longer. The Storm2 packs all the latest connectivity features, fast 3G EV-DO Rev.A, and WI-FI, the long awaited WI-FI.

Now, lets go back to that ”amazing capability to maintain the user constantly connected.” The Storm2 really does this well. It keeps the user updated in real time to social networks, for example, Facebook and Twitter updates are reflected immediately in the homescreen, a thing that most OS’s are not capable of. The Storm2 is really a connectivity monster, seeing that red notification light is a joy, it lets you know what is happening, right now.

Multimedia:

The Storm2, although a device aimed at business, is a media powerhouse as well. It has a standard audio jack, a very important feature and maybe essential to call a device ”media capable.” It has 16GB of memory, more than enough to store movies, music and pictures. And has a really fast processor that makes everything media related lightning fast. The Storm2 has all the media features neatly arranged under the ”Media” folder where the user can access music, pics, videos, ringtones etc… The device also has a really powerful speaker, a welcome feature in any phone.

Screen:

The touchscreen of the Storm2 is one of its kind. It actually clicks every time you touch it. The way it works is a bit hard to understand at first but then you get the concept pretty easily: tap to highlight, click to confirm. The screen is the best part of the Blackberry Storm2, it is a unique experience to use this device with the amazing clickable touchscreen. The way it works is brilliant too. When the phone is locked, the screen doesn’t click, when the device is unlocked, the screen is alive again. Even better, when you touch the screen with for example, a pen, the screen doesn’t click even if unlocked, it just responds to the finger. The technology used in the screen has improved a lot since the Storm, it is now really easy to press even on the farthest point from the center. You can even click twice at the same time. I will give the screen a 9/10 because sometimes the four buttons on the bottom don’t respond at the first attempt to click them.

Camera:

The Blackberry Storm2 is not an imaging device, but 3.2 Megapixel, Auto-Focus and Flash do a great job. The Storm2 takes good shots in the day, almost no defect at all. In the dark, it struggles a bit more to take a clear shot but does generally a good job. The Storm2 is an excellent imaging device to be a phone not oriented towards imaging.

Conclusion:

The Blackberry Storm2 is an excellent device. In my opinion, it is probably the most balanced smartphone I have ever used. It has all the advanced features from a smartphone, in one sexy body. The Storm2 can complete the tasks of an advanced user, as well as a beginner: that, makes it the most balanced smartphone in the market. Easy to use, yet powerful.
